Even though almost everyone has heard of aerobic or anaerobic fitness, very few people understand what the difference is.

By definition, aerobic fitness strengthens the muscles of the heart while aerobic fitness focuses on strengthening the muscles of the body.

Aerobic exercise, in particular, is also called cardiovascular exercise and which is designed to make your heart pump and in time, cause you to run out of breath. Some examples of aerobic exercise include swimming, running and skiing and so on and so forth.

AnaerobicĀ  exercise, alternatively, is also referred to as ‘resistance training’ and these workouts will push your muscles and strengthen them. Some examples include calisthenics, yoga and working out with weights.

As for the benefits, aerobic exercise is extremely beneficial to one’s heart and as a result of regular exercise, can prevent heart disease as well as other circulatory illnesses. Since another benefit include weight loss, this also prevents type 2 diabetes as well as a number of types of cancer.

As for anaerobic exercise, it will strengthen your muscles and protect your body in the case of a fall while also providing support to your joints that might be in danger of wearing out. Without a doubt, strength training can enhance your performance as a professional sportsman and improve your self-esteem.

That said, if one is wondering which type of exercise works best, aerobic exercise has been found to burn more calories compared to anaerobic exercise and is therefore the best choice especially if you are trying to lose weight.
